Family Stories & Traditions
Family is the cornerstone of our society. We practice a patrilineal system, tracing lineage through the father's line. Yet, the role of mothers and aunts in nurturing and advising is highly revered. Respect for elders is paramount; we show this through gestures like kneeling or bowing when greeting, and never calling an elder by name without a title like "Torgbui" (grandfather) or "Mama" (grandmother).
Fishing
As Anlos, fishing is not just our livelihood; it's a way of life. Our expertise in lagoon and sea fishing is renowned. I grew up watching the colorful wooden boats, each with unique symbols, set out at dawn to return at dusk. Women in my family, like many Anlo women, are skilled fish traders and processors, crucial to our economy.
Personal Journey
I grew up in the Volta Region of Ghana, along the coast watching the colorful wooden boats, each with unique symbols, set out at dawn and return at dusk. I learned rhythms from a young age; they're how we express joy, sorrow, and everything in between.
I was raised in a close family that valued quality time together. My parents taught me to value experiences over things, and this has shaped my outlook on the world.
